Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Our Florida Unclaimed Property Services

What is a "Registered Locator"?

A Registered Locator is one who is registered with the Florida Department of Financial Services to aasist individuals and businesses in finding and filing claims for unclaimed property. In order to become a Registered Locator one must be either an attorney, a private investigator, or a certified public accountant. Finder Investigative Services, LLC is a licensed private investigation agency that is registered with the Department of Financial Services. Our locator ID number is 107376002.

Why should I use a Registered Locator to search for unclaimed property?

While you may search for unclaimed property on your own, members of the general public are limited to searching by first and last names only. Registered Locators have access to more search fields when searching the unclaimed property database, allowing us to better pinpoint one's property. Because Finder Investigative Services is also a private investigation agency, we have access to other search tools and databases that are not accessible to the general public.

How long will it take to get my money?

The Division of Unclaimed Property states that claims will be processed within 90 days, although most claims are processed quicker. If you choose to have our office file your claim, we can process and track most claims online which may result in a faster approval time than if you were to file the claim on your own.

What documentation will I need to prove the property belongs to me?

At a minimum, you will need to provide a copy of a government issued identification card, such as a driver's license. Each claim may have slightly different requirements to prove ownership, and you may be asked to provide additional information. Because we are experienced in investigations, we can usually acquire most other supporting documents (death certificates, marriage records, deeds, probate filings, etc.) for you. We will also cover the cost of those documents so you won't have to pay anything out of pocket.

What is a "Limited Power of Attorney" form?

A "Limited Power of Attorney" (or LPOA for short) is a form you will need to sign for us to file your claim. It is "limited" in that it only grants us permission to act on your behalf for the purpose of filing a claim for your unclaimed property. It does not grant us any other permissions and it is specific to the unclaimed property account numbers listed on the form. If you have multiple unclaimed property accounts, we can only file claims for the accounts specified on the form.

What are your fees for your services?

We do not charge any fees to serch for your accounts, and there is no obligation to continue with us should you change your mind. If you would like our assistance with filing a claim, our typical "finder fee" is 20% of the value of the property that is recovered. Our fee is paid to us directly by the State of Florida, and you never be asked to make any payments to us.

What if the State of Florida denies my claim?

If your initial claim is denied, we will follow up with the state to see what additional information could be provided to get the claim approved. You do not forfeit any rights if the claim is denied and you are free to make as many additional claim attempts as you want. We will continue to file on your behalf until we get the claim approved or a determination is made that we cannot sufficiently prove ownership. If we are unable to get your claim approved, you owe us nothing.

What if I don't have a government issued identification card?

If you don't have any ID card, you can still file a claim. Instead of an identification card, you will need to fill out an Affidavit Attesting to Claimant's Identity form. Our office will provide you with the required form.

Is Florida Treasure Hunt Legitimate?

The Floida unclaimed money lists may be searched by anyone at fltreasurehunt.org.  This is the Florida Government unclaimed property site, so yes, fltreasurehunt is real.
